Hogan Cup

The Hogan Cup is an annual high school improvisational competition hosted by Unexpected Productions, Seattle’s first improv theater. Recognized as the first event of its kind in the Northwest, the Hogan Cup offers students from Puget Sound area high schools a supportive and educational environment to engage in the art of improvisation. Founded in 1997, the Hogan Cup has become one of the most treasured programs of our theater, offering a vital platform for nurturing creativity, confidence, and collaboration among young performers.

Key Activities and Details

The Hogan Cup Tournament is carefully structured to maximize student growth and engagement:

  • Training: Each participating high school team is paired with a dedicated coach from Unexpected Productions’ professional ensemble. Over September and October, students receive 12 hours of customized improv training focused on teamwork, narrative development, and theatrical skills.
  • Matches: After training, each team competes in two official matches—a “home” match and an “away” match—scheduled between mid-October and November 20, 2025. Matches use a TheatreSports™-style format, with scenes judged on entertainment, narrative, and technical execution.
  • Finals: The four teams with the highest average scores advance to the Hogan Cup Finals, held at Unexpected Productions’ Market Theater in Pike Place Market on Monday, November 24, 2025.

While framed as a competition, the Hogan Cup’s deeper goal is to nurture a peer-driven, inclusive space where students support and uplift one another. Improvisation is a transformative tool for youth development, teaching essential life skills such as:

  • Active Listening: Teens learn to be fully present and responsive, deepening empathy and improving communication.
  • Confidence: Performing without a script helps teens trust their instincts and build self-assurance in uncertain situations.
  • Teamwork: Improv relies on collaboration, teaching students to build ideas together and share the spotlight.
  • Adaptability: Students learn to think on their feet and embrace mistakes as opportunities, fostering resilience.
  • Creativity and Expression: Improvisation unlocks imagination and gives young people a voice both onstage and off.

Importantly, the Hogan Cup breaks down social silos. As one coach noted this year, the tournament fostered cooperation across diverse student groups, creating unexpected friendships and mutual respect. Matches hosted at participating schools were free and open to friends and family, and students were offered complimentary tickets to additional improv shows at our theater, further deepening their connection to the performing arts.
