Did a short form show in Zurich last night. The audience was enthusiastic and of course, cautious around English. The highlight came from a surprising source for me. The game where you play a serious scene until music erupts then you go into a wild dance that includes the audience, lights, etc. When the music stops, you go back to the scene. We had a three-piece band, which was great, and so were they. So we decided to play it.
From the suggestion “funeral” the scene involved a mother of soldier killed in Afghanistan at his funeral. A relative shows up and they discuss how to overcome the grief and the ideals behind the death itself. The in the middle of these very serious moments, dance would break out and we were on our way!
What struck me was the seriousness that we played in the scene, really contrasted the dancing. I realized that prior to this, I had only seen and done, typically humorous improv scenes countered with dancing. The downright drama of the situation made the dancing more macabre and the emotional level of the scene deeper.

First full day of this improv trip to Europe. Arrived in Zurich Yesterday and met with UP Alum Jill Farris. This morning, we walked around Zurich in a pouring rain. Zurich remains the same as it was last time I was here.
No improv yet, shows start tomorrow! But a narrative related incident. Jill and I returned to Winterthur where we each have rooms above the theater we are playing in.
We had dinner, and decided to walk a bit. We round the corner from the theater and we see a young man standing on the pedestrian only walkway, yelling into a door/hallway. We continue walking all the way to the end of the street, down another, and turn around.
We get to the spot where the young man was and there are 5 policemen shining their flashlights on the ground, looking for something. They begin to walk behind us, shining their lights on the ground. We keep walking past a young man (same young man) with a young woman, and just past him, I notice a pool of blood and many droplets. In that same moment, the police shine their lights on him and a discussion begins. They are fascinated by his hand, which is bleeding.
We keep walking to the other end of the street, and when we pass this spot on our return, they are gone. Advancing further, the young man is now in the police van and the woman is questioned by the hallway.
They drive off. Jill and I are at the hallway looking in….
There is a great deal of blood and broken glass.
We have an beginning and an end, neither of which stands alone, but the implied middle….. the stories Jill and I came up with to justify the implied middle. Who was he yelling at? Why SO much blood? What did the woman have to do with it? Was there a third, or merely all the blood was from his hand?
Now, the rain is beginning to fall and I imagine the blood blending and mixing with the drops as they gather momentum and make the trek to the gutter, to the drain, to who knows where.
